New Year, New Laws for Tennessee

You may or may not have heard that Tennessee will have 16 new laws which will go into effect January 1, 2018. Some of the new laws might not affect everyone, but some will affect many. Here are a few that may affect you:

  • Cell Phone Usage in School Zones – Anyone using a handheld cell phone while in an active school zone may receive a fine of up to $50.
  • Headlights – It is illegal for vehicles to have any color lights on the front other than white or amber lights. An exception is only made for emergency vehicles, law enforcement, school buses and mail carriers.
  • Handgun Permits – Individuals who submit proof that they passed either combat-pistol training or small-arms pistol training while serving in the USAF are exempt from the firing-range portion of handgun carry permit training.

Some of the other new laws taking effect on January 1, 2018 deal with barbers, school transportation, campus free speech, alarm services, disabled persons, marijuana jurisdiction and prescription drugs.
